All She Could Do Was Feel
"Close your eyes," he said. Then, a moment later, the velvet settled over them and the world went completely, luxuriously dark.
She had thought darkness would be frightening. Instead it was enormous — the way space is enormous, the way a held breath is enormous. Her other senses immediately began to expand into it, filling the void: the Egyptian cotton of the sheets, the particular scent of the candles he'd lit, the exact distance of his breathing.
"Can you see anything?" he asked.
"Nothing," she said. And found herself smiling.
Something brushed her collarbone. Something impossibly soft — the leading edge of a feather, she thought, or the tail of something silk. Then it was gone, and for thirty seconds nothing happened at all. She had to resist the urge to reach for him. That was the exercise: to wait. To trust the shape of the silence.
Then his voice came from behind her — she could have sworn he'd been in front — and she laughed despite herself. "You moved," she said.
"Mm. Notice how much better you listen in the dark?"
She did notice. His voice had a texture now. She could hear the smile in it. She could hear the heat.
The feather touched the inside of her wrist, a single stroke. Her entire arm woke up.
When he finally removed the blindfold, she blinked into the candlelight and the room was extraordinary.
She had lived in this apartment for four years. She knew every corner of it. But right now it looked like somewhere she had never been — the colors richer, the shadows deeper, every surface textured and alive. Her brain had been starved and was now feasting.
"Your eyes," he said, watching her, "are enormous."
She looked at her hands. She could see the lines of her palms with strange clarity. She looked at him.
She reached up and pulled him down to her.
"Again," she said, against his mouth. "Tomorrow. We do this again."
